School Accountability Committee

The School Accountability Committee (SAC) is commissioned by and responsible to the Prospect Academy Board of Directors. The SAC assumes primary responsibility for working with the school leader to define academic excellence, ensuring that all board members know the charter promises that were made to the community and the authorizer, and devising clear and consistent measures to monitor these goals.

 

The Accountability Committee also ensures compliance with C.R.S. § 22-11-401 and 402 by making recommendations to the board regarding allocation of resources, creation of academic goals, progress made towards academic goals, and school improvement strategies.

 

The School Accountability Committee has no decision-making authority; it is a working committee that makes recommendations to the full Board of Directors in order to strengthen the school’s academic programs.

What does a SAC do?

  • Meets at least 4 times/year and works to determine whether decisions affecting the educational processes of our school are advancing or impeding student achievement. Reports to students, parents, boards of education, educators, and the community on the educational performance of the school and provides data for the appraisal of such performance through the LA board of directors.

  • Specific tasks:

    • Conducts the annual parent and staff surveys (familiarity with SurveyMonkey or other online survey tool is helpful)

    • Facilitates creation of Family Connection Nights providing insight from Lincoln Academy teachers and specialists on relevant topics in education

    • Communicates closely with school administration about district, state and federal testing and reporting data

    • Formulating a school “dashboard” for monitoring school-wide data

    • Preferably, members should enjoy data analysis

Why does a SAC exist? 

Purpose of an Accountability committee  . . . 

  •  Serves in an advisory role to the principal. The principal is responsible for implementing the accountability process in the school.
  • Adopts school goals/objectives for the improvement of education at Arvada that are aligned with the district Strategic Plan and with the state statute. 

  • Adopts a plan to improve educational achievement, maximize graduation rates, and support school safety and a welcoming environment aligned with district policy. 

  • Reports on the educational performance of the school and provides data for appraising such performance to students, parents, staff, Board of Education and other educators.

  • Makes recommendations to the principal and district leaders regarding the prioritization of expenditures of district funds. 

  • Selects from its members a chairperson who is not an employee of the school district, as well as a co- chairperson and a recorder.

  • Adopts rules of operation consistent with district policy and state statute. 

  • Approves the school’s Unified Improvement Plan for each school year.

  • Reviews the school’s progress on goals/objectives established for the Unified Improvement Plan, as well as the annual report to the community.

  • Makes recommendations for the spending of school moneys, including private, state and federal grants.

  • Develops, revises, and/or monitors a school safety plan consistent with district policy. 

An Accountability Committee is Not . . .

  •  A mini school board
  • A group that evaluates district personnel

  • A group that makes hiring and firing recommendations

  • A policy-making body
